Mood boards
I started by creating a few mood boards. One with minimalist movie poster inspiration, one with Mr. Robot's marketing material, one with elements from the show that I found interesting, and a final one with other fan made posters.
Sketches
Next, I sketched 24 different ideas for my poster. I decided to go with the concept where different hands are reaching into Elliot's brain. The illusion of control, multiple personalities, and unreliable narrators are large themes within the show, so I felt that this concept was able to allude to those ideas in various ways. With the remianing sketches, I used those as inspiration for video clips within my title sequence.
Poster and title sequence design
To bring my poster to life, I combined my initial sketch with binary code and circuit wires to tie in the themes of technology and hacking from the show. I couldn't find reference photos with hands in the exact positions I wanted them to be in, so I decided to photograph my own hands for this project as well! I then illustrated my poster in Adobe Illustrator.

For my title sequence, I used Premiere Pro and After Effects to combine elements from my poster with stock footage and props from the show. My sister bought a replica of Elliot's journal, so it was fun to take some footage from an in world object and work it into my title sequence. I also used the circuit wires from my poster to connect sequences and lead the viewer's eye to each actor's name.
